New BRDF comparison paper by xDDiff consortium members

A new paper on BRDF comparison has recently been published by xDDiff consortium members Ellie Molloy from MSL, New Zealand and Tatjana Quast from PTB, Germany. To extend the comparison beyond the capabilities within the consortium, Heather Patrick from NIST, USA did also participate.

In this paper, the BRDF of white and grey reflection standards has been determined in geometries covering the entire detection hemisphere. The results of this comparison demonstrate the current limits of agreement between BRDF measurements and highlight the discrepancy between goniospectrophotometric and integrating sphere-based realizations of diffuse reflectance.

PhD Defense Successfully Completed

We are pleased to announce that Jinglin Fu has successfully defended his PhD thesis on June 23rd 2026 at PTB.
His research, titled “Development and Metrological Characterization of a Measuring System for Accurate Multidimensional BTDF Measurements”, was conducted as part of the BxDiff project (18SIB03, previous project of xDDiff) and contributes to the metrological characterization of optical diffuse transmission.

New stakeholder: ILM

We are pleased to inform that we have a new stakeholder/collaborator that just joined xDDiff: ILM, the institute of laser technologies in medicine and metrology at Ulm university.

The institute of laser technologies in medicine and metrology at Ulm university, ILM, is a member of the “Innovationsallianz Baden-Württemberg”, which consists of 10 institutes conducting research and development especially for industrial applications. ILM has three departments, one of which, called “Quantitative Imaging and Sensors (QIS)”, works on the field of light propagation in scattering media and the determination of their optical properties. QIS has 20 employee working in experimental and theoretical research areas.

1st Progress Meeting 2025

The 1st progress meeting of the project xDDiff will be on March 11th (9 am to 6 pm) and March 12th (9 am to 12 am) 2025 at the University of Alicante in Spain. Save the date to be with us in Alicante. We will come later with a full agenda and with registration instructions.
